The month of September means only one thing for the people of Lisdoonvarna: the annual matchmaking festival. Throughout the month, more than 20, people descend on the town to enjoy the ceol agus craic, and maybe, just maybe, find their true love. You might remember last month I mentioned that until relatively recently the 19 th century at a conservative estimate that marriage was a contract, a business arrangement. A good marriage could set up a family with land and prosperity for generations.
Culture Trip stands with Black Lives Matter. Far from the world of Tinder, the lively Dublin nightlife scene, and almost any other modern-day take on romance you care to mention, Lisdoonvarna hosts an annual autumn festival aimed, traditionally, at helping lonely rural farmers to meet a match from outside their immediate area.
Despite being viewed as something of a beloved national joke, however, Lisdoonvarna has modernised substantially in recent years. The town has always been a tourist spot, almost exclusively because of its spa water, which offers the other main attraction aside from the festival. Another way of putting that is that the festival runs for over 12 hours a day, for the best part of a month.
the flamboyant craic at the brilliant rural Irish festival Sep 27, The matchmaking festival is Lisdoonvarna’s harvest and the townsfolk reap it with a will.
In September every year, the population of this tiny town swells like sore head while a large matchmaking event takes place, attracting singles from all over Europe. In fact around 40, people attend, hoping to catch themselves a fine Irish spouse, a very valuable prize these days. While there is still a fourth-generation matchmaker on hand at the event, the festival has now evolved into a party where singles can find someone without necessarily seeking the approval of a matchmaker.
September is the peak month of the matching session, and this traditionally was down to farming realties: with the harvest safely in, bachelor farmers could have some free time to search for a pretty lass, without having to juggle reaping with dating. Over the past decade, with a rise in internet dating, the festival has seen numbers drop off somewhat. But recently, the numbers have surged once again. Many people are becoming disillusioned with internet dating, saying that the pictures posted on dating sites can be old or misleading.
If you attend the matchmaking festival, you can leave the worries of photoshopped profile pictures behind. And if you meet someone in person who has a bad smell, you can pretend to drop a contact lens and crawl off to the nearest emergency exit. So thus the appeal of a match-making festival: you get to try before you buy. And getting to know someone by just striking up a conversation is a lost art. But it is being revived at Lisdoonvarna, if you know how to talk to a farmer.

Thinking of stopping off in Lisdoonvarna on the Monday 24th Sept for a night. Would the Festival be as good mid week or would it be very quiet? Did you look at the schedule posted by clareirishman? Doesn’t appear to be anything going on for the festival at all on Monday 24th. There is something on every night throughout September but Monday to Thursday nights inclusive are quieter than the antics of the weekend nights. From the schedule I couldn’t see if there was anything on the 24th only weekends.
From experience of other festivals in my own locality, week nights are gone much quieter in recent times so I was wondering if any local could advise me as to how Lisdoonvarna is. Thinking of booking a room in The Imperial. The schedule of events is a bit confusing. They have listed the events for the weekends, but if you read the bottom of the page it says “music and dance” every day.

I recommend Lisdoonvarna as one of the most famous matchmaking festivals in Ireland in my book — as one means to meet an eligible farmer! Despite the popularity of online dating sites, the popularity of the matchmaker still holds strong and of course, the fact that Lisdoonvarna is a world famous festival adds to the fun too. Is it really that successful as a matchmaking festival though? You bet it is. Couples that met at Lisdoonvarna ten, twenty, thirty and forty years ago still return to the festival to meet up with old friends, relive those bygone days and just to enjoy the craic and the dancing.
Coincidentally, when telling a man about my book last summer, he told me that he had met his girlfriend there the previous year. He had planned to go down for the craic with two friends. The two of them changed their minds, claiming that farm jobs had become important. Nerves was probably the reason.
